TOP OFFICERS OFFICE HEBREW TRANSLITERATION PRONUNCIATION PLURAL PRESIDENT N'si-ah (N'see-ah) Nesiot The Hebrew word Nasi literally means "elder." It is used to refer to the President of Israel as well as the presidents of Jewish organizations. It was taken to mean president because the elder is usually a person with a great deal of experience, capable of leading. The feminine form of the word is N'siah, and ably depicts this high office, the person chosen to fill it is a highly qualified leader. VICE PRESIDENT n'320 S'ganit (S'gan-eet) S'ganiot The word S'gan, masculine of S'ganit, has been used since antiquity to designate a nobleman, a person holding high office and more specifically, the second highest office in a Jewish insti- tution. In modern times, it means a military or political adjutant or associate head; in modern Hebrew S'gan Ha-Nasi means vice-president. Most often, as the general term for secretary (as in AZA's Aleph Mazkir), the word gains refinement in its more specific use here since our corresponding secretary has the task of reminding BBG of its responsibilities. TREASURER n'7272 Gizbarit (Geez-bar-eet) Gizbariot The manager or treasurer at the courts and Temple of ancient Israel carried this designation, which in the eternal spirit of the Hebrew language still remains an active term in modern times. MIT MOTHER ON Aym Ha-chavairot (Aim Ha-cha-vai-rot) Imahot Literally mother of the friends. The word chavair has another, deeper meaning. In ancient Israel small Jewish groups existed which were specifically dedicated to the study and perpetuation of Jewish values. No larger in membership than an average BBG chapter, these exclusive societies called their members chavairim, the masculine equivalent of the word we use to describe B'nai B'rith Girls. OTHER TITLES EDITOR & REPORTER mony Orechet (0-rech-et) Orchot The word orechet is akin, for example, to the word aruch which is part of the title of Shulchan Aruch- The Ordered Table-we have given to one of our major codes of Jewish law. Since the key to a good chapter newspaper is its orderly character and solid Jewish content, our Hebrew name is quite appropriate. COUNSELOR Madricha (Mad-ree-cha) Madrichot Madrich or madricha are words constantly used in summer camps to describe a bunk counselor. From the Hebrew l'hadrich- to give guidance and direction to- this Hebrew name aptly depicts the sensitive role of the past-president- HISTORIAN n'3790 Safranit (Saf-ra-neet) Safraniot THIS WORD HAS AS ITS BASE WORD Sefer which means book. It is usually used to refer to a keeper of the books or librarian. A historian is also a person who maintains books on the events which take place. SARGEANT-AT-ARMS Mashgicha (Mash-gee-cha) Mashgichot Mashgiach, is the masculine form of the word which means supervisor. This word is there - fore, apropos, since it designates the one who is to maintain the order at meetings. MONITRESS nnann Shomeret Ha-brit (Show-meret Ha-brit) Shomrot Ha-Brit This office has the function of reading the opening and closing prayers of the meeting. The Hebrew words translate as "guardian of the Covenant," therefore, describe the duties of the monitress very well. NOTE: IN MANY CHAPTERS THERE ARE COMBINATIONS OF OFFICERS SUCH AS HISTOR- IAN-REPORTER. IN SUCH INSTANCES THE MORE IMPORTANT POSITION TITLE SHOULD BE USED.
