State of the Order International N'siah Speech, 1997-1998
State of the Order by Shari Katz 97-98 International N'siah
A child Her world is an impeccable masterpiece; bound by nothing but the limits of
her extensive imagination.
A
child Her world is a timeless novel; constantly deriving new interpretations and
purposes.
A child Her world is full of wonder; as she precariously asks how long life can truly
be this good.
A child If her world could only exist to eternity.
My sister B'nai B'rith Girls,
I cherished my childhood. I presume that most of you did, as well. My
childhood
was reading Dr. Seuss and roller-skating, and playing house and Hop-Skotch. It
was
slip and slide and gummy bracelets, pigtails and Kids Meals. It was when
parents and teenagers, each time they saw us, were amazed over how much we've
grown, when we fished for that prize at the bottom of the cereal or cracker
jack box after school, and when our grinning waiter handed us a gigantic red
helium balloon after our parents paid our breakfast bill. Our childhood was
colorful, our childhood was sheer innocence, and our childhood was magical,
because we were special in the eyes of others.
We are still children. Certainly, we no longer play with dolls and toys, and
yes,
we are more physically and mentally developed than most children. Yet, in our
order, a child is not defined necessarily by age, but by her surroundings. We
are the children
of the B'nai B'rith Girls: the members who are limited by nothing but
ourselves. We are the children: the ones who see the world through our
adolescent pair of eyes: eyes of curiosity, amazement, and wonder. We are the
children: racing against no one but the clock that hangs in the middle of the
room, swaying back and forth, ticking at moments both used and missed. No
matter how much of our time we have utilized to its full potential, it is
inevitable that our membership will, eventually, run out.
53 years ago, BBG was but an outline on a scrap sheet of notebook paper.
Between the sagacious reasoning of some, and the impractical visions of
others, we
forged a harmony and called this the B'nai B'rith Girls. Since then, this
order has been thriving because it has constantly been comprised of relentless
children who will go to all extremes to watch this order succeed. Our order is
composed of members who will spend their four years playing; experimenting
