S.G. Kusworm to Sam Beber Letter, c. 1949
Sq. Known
I congratulate the AZA on its 25th Anniversary, and I
congratulate Sam Beber, its founder, and the magnificent work which
he has done in the sponsoring and nurturing of this junior order
of B'nai B'rith until, from very humble beginnings of a few boys
in Omaha, it has risen to the heights, and now has thousands of
thousands of members in the United States, Canada, and in other
foreign countries.
Sam Beber, in visualing the great work which could be
accomplished by the Jewish youth, must had had in mind the words
of the poet who said:
"An old man traveling a lone highway,
Came at evening cold and gray
To a chasm deep and wide
"The old man crossed in the twilight dim
For the sullen stream held no fears for him.
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And builded a bridge to span the tide.
"old Man" cried a fellow pilgrim near
You are wasting your strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day,
And you never again will pass this way.
"You have crossed the chasm deep and wide,
Why build you a bridge at eventide?
And the builder raised his old gray head:
'Good Friend, on the path I have come," he said,
'There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet will pass this way.
"!This stream, which has been as naught to me,
To that fair haired boy may a pitfall be;
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim --
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him. qu
Sam Beber builded that bridge. It is true that others
helped him, but he was the inspiration for its building, and
there have crossed over that bridge many thousands of youth of
our Faith, who have gain/from the pilgrimmage of crossing that
bridge the inspriation of the Higher Loyalties of Life. All young
men and young women are today walking over that bridge.
To some it will be the bridge of joy and success; to
others the bridge of sorrows and sighs. The answer rests with
LAW OFFICES OF
the individual.
