the Hillel Foundation. I do not mean by that that the Hillel
Foundation.is not as important as I have considered it, but I
can see where the A.Z.A. work may be just as important and the
results just as healthy. After I had seen the enthusiasm of the
boys it occurred to me that possibly we were making a mistake."
May I also quote you from a letter which I received from
Bob Lappen of Des Moines, first vice-president of District Grand
Lodge #6?
"However, as I have written you before, a serious situation
has arisen in regard to our local school. Two of our boys,
particularly Sam Marknan, center, whom you will no doubt recall
as being the outstanding star of the tournament, as well as
Ben Beckerman, are playing and have been on the first Team of
a local high school, North High, which school I am an alumnus
(not that that makes any difference, of course.) As it happens,
on the night of February 25, the semi-finals of the high school
championship tournament is to be played and North High feels,
and has openly expressed the fact, that if Sam Markman and
Ben Beckerman leave them and do not play, that the team will be
weakened and, perhaps, in part destroyed. However, the two
winning teams will play their finals on Saturday night,
February 26th, which will be for the purpose of choosing the
city championship team as well as choosing an all-city team.
In addition to this, the city championship team will play in
the district tournament, leading to a state high school tourna-

Now, unfortunately, before I or any other adult members of
this community got into the matter, the boys werecalled to the
office of the principal of theihigh school and were informed
of the situation, and asked the boys with which team they would
rather play, their high school team or the A.Z.A. team. The
boys expressed themselves to the principal that their loyalty
to the A.Z.A. and their love to play with the A.Z.A. team in
Chicago far exceeded the desire to play for their high school
even though it might mean bringing the city championship, state
championship or national championship to their high school."
The situation to which Brother Lappen has called my at-
tention has been satisfactorily adjusted. I quote you some of
Lappen's letter only to show you what a great appeal the A.Z.A.
has for the average boy.
I just wrote a letter to the rabbis at the Hillel Foundations
of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, challenging them to debate
our teams immediately following the Chicago tournament. Because
this thought did not enter my mind until today, it may be that
time will not permit these debates. However, it would have been

This single page of a longer letter relates testimony from boys concerning their preference to play for their AZA basketball team rather than their high school team.
