instrumental in stopping the Syrian advance on the Golan Heights during the Yom
Kippur War. The BBYO delegates, along with a large group of Noar Lenoar members,
visited the Command Post of the 7th Armored Brigade, had lunch with the soldiers,
and had a chance to observe first-hand the Israeli defense establishment on the
Golan Heights.
Accompanying the BBYO delegates to the Golan Heights were International
Director, Dr. Max F. Baer, BBYO Director of Field Operations, Alex Balzer (who
served as staff advisor to the BBYO delegation during the Convention) and Youth
Commission Treasurer, Jess Fisher. Fisher presented the soldiers with a television
set for their leisure-time use and, for each soldier, a pair of gloves to protect agaisnt
the bitter cold at the peak of the Golan Heights.
The Noar Lenoar group and the BBYO delegates also had a chance to visit Moledet
B'nai B'rith, the moshav shetufi (collective settlement) which serves as a base for
BBYO'ers on the Israel Summer Institute. Under construction, with ISF funds, is a
new combination dining hall-community center which will be completed by this
summer. This new facility will enable, for the first time, all BBYO groups visiting
Israel to stay and work at Moledet B'nai B'rith. The BBYO delegates had a chance
to inspect the building and see plans for the completed structure.
