Silver Lining: AZA Is Fifty, 1974
SILVER LINING
By DR. SAMUEL SILVER
(A Seven Arts Feature)
AZA I S FIFTY
AZA IS TURNING fifty.
Breathes there a Jew with soul so atrophied that he doesn't
remember some contact with AZA?
AZA, just in case you don't know, is the junior edition of
B'nai B'rith.
AZA was the place where many as teenager got his his first
taste of belonging to a Jewish club.
I'll wager half of the leaders of UJA, Israel Bonds, B'nai B'rith,
synagogue organizations cut their eye teeth as members and officers
of the AZA chapters which cover this country.
AZA'S HISTORY buzzes with the names of those three B's. Julius
Bisno, Sam Beber and Dr. Max Baer (who to this day is the No. 1
professional of the AZA with offices in that beautiful B'nai B'rith
headquarters, 1640 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., Washington, D. C.,
which you ought to visit the next time you're in the nation's capital).
Jack Spitzer, a conscientious Jewish leader from Seattle, heads the
celebrational hierarchy for AZA's golden anniversary.
HIGH POINT of the observance will be gala festivities May 3 to May
6 in the Arlington Park Towers, an eighth of tankful outside of
Chicago.
In the meantime, all through the country (and the rest of the world,
for B'nai B'rith is global) there will be gatherings, replete with
nostalgia and sentimentality and downright wholesome resolutions to
keep alive the flame of joyous Judaism. Your own synagogue will
probably have an AZA Sabbath eve. Be sure to attend and help to
salute one of the finest organizations ever created by the American
Jewish community.
And if you want to know what the letters AZA stand for talk to your
nearest rabbi or AZAnik.
