Linda Rubin to International President Memorandum, April 18, 1965
April 18, 1965
Dear International President of the B'nai B'rith Girls of the
B'nai B'rith Youth Organization,
The holy beginning of Pesach ended I have sat down to be- the
gin the polishing up of my files for you. I never received
for with letters of my observations on subjects now divided tried
past files so I have tried to create a new informative set
in categories you according to the situations I faced. I have
to make them concise and helpful.Distribute what you wish but
please read through them thoroughly first and learn what little you can.
quotes, I etc. will present many little things to you besides these
have spattered them with personal letters to you and
files but these are the first I made ready for you.
As I write this I know only that you were a member of my
executive board and I know now of several seeking that strange
but enchanting title I used to address you. I hope I have been
helping you in the past I hope I am helping you now and I
hope you feel free to share your questions, worries, etc. with me
next year because I can understand No, you won't lean on me
or need me to think for you but I want to be your counselor
and more so to be your freind.
Idon't know who you are now so let me be candid.: do not
wish to deal in specific advice now and won't discuss BBG
but rather you. This office can be filled by a SHOFAR article
now and then; it demands only what you demand of yourself and
you can never fail to fulfill your duties. Be realistically idealistic
and don't be crushed or disillusioned at the bad. There is
much that is wrong or will go wrong, there are many mistakes,
there are disappointments. You must always remember that we
are working toward goals and must work to overcome the bad
not ignore it. BBG is not synonymous with perfection but it
is not itsantonym. Find balance and sense. Seek to be strong
and calm.
You are not a god nor a queen nor a celebrity and any
conceit or overconfidence will cost you much. This is a one year
deal. It demands and repays but you are a normal human being
and are a representative of the girls-just like them not above
them- this is hard to remember. Sometimes people will make
such a fuss over you and herald you as the most promising youth
of ages but they see us come and go and they never fail to
be more impressed each year. Remember you have a life and
BBG may be a guiding influence but do not ,not even this year,
let it replace your education, family, or health. Those stay
with you while two years from now a meager handful will re-
member you as president and few will herald you for the past.
Love every person you meet intensely. Seek to know the people
behind the faces andhands and tears and pins. Grow as you
help others to grow and exercise your every being and stretch
to the stars and further. Do better than I because that is
the sign that I succeeded and love your board and work with
them so that they find a challange and a worth to your level.
Be brave and freeand good and kind and human. Cry when you must,
lose your temper if you must but watch your situations. Understand
and understand and understand
push yourself and never lose
your composure before a group. Do not fake an ideal, belief,
smile, laugh, speech. Be true to yourself and your family and
friends. Be honest and your Order will love and respect you
