IN RE: UPDATE
We thought we would take this time to bring you up-to-date on some of
the happenings within the BBYO program over the last couple of months.
With this letter we are sending Minutes of the Executive Committee.
We are sorry that the Commission Minutes are not yet available. Another
meeting of the Executive Committee will be held next weekend at the B'nai
B'rith Beber Camp. This is a departure from our usual process. However,
we believe that meeting at Beber Camp will help us to understand this facet
of our program in greater depth.
The program of BBYO appears to be running fairly smoothly. Membership is
stable but not increasing as we would wish. This year, the 60th Anniversary
was celebrated throughout the country. A variety of events were held on a
city-by-city basis with balloon launches by far the most popular activity.
Throughout the country a number of reunions were held on a regional basis,
proclamations issued, and a great deal of publicity generated for the AZA and
BBG programs. In May the Omaha community, with Dr. Max F. Baer as the principal
speaker, dedicated a monument to the founding of the Aleph Zadik Aleph on the
grounds of the Jewish Community Center of Omaha. We are sure that many of you
had an opportunity to participate in your local celebrations. The culmination
of the year's activities will take place at the AZA and BBG International Con-
ventions at B'nai B'rith Perlman Camp in August. Philip Klutznick will be the
principal speaker. In the meantime we hear that many of the District Conventions
will be holding celebration programs throughout the Order.
Another major activity this year was Tay Sachs education. It's really remarkable
what can be accomplished when our young people put their minds to it. We
estimate that this year more than 10,000 youth were exposed to Tay Sachs educa-
tional activities throughout the country. BBYO was honored by Tay Sachs at
their annual meeting in May. The proposals for next year include education
concerning drinking and driving. The programs will be kicked-off at the
International Conventions in August. BBYO continues to provide important
educational activities for our young people.
We are delighted to share with you progress that has made in the development
of BBYO in Europe. Beginning full-scale in October, twelve chapters have been
established in France, Belgium, Austria and Spain. Over 300 young people are
now involved in our fledgling program in District #19. The first convention
will be held in Paris in the beginning of July, electing officers for a
