Biafra
In 1967, the Republic of Biafra declared independence from Nigeria, leading to the Nigerian Civil War. Within a year, Nigerian troops surrounded Biafra and imposed a blockade as a deliberate policy to starve Biafran citizens. The B'nai B'rith Foundation responded to the humanitarian crisis with a welfare fund to aid those starving in Biafra, especially children. Teens in AZA and BBG chapters participated by holding food drives and fundraising for medicine to be sent to Biafra. By the time Biafra was defeated in 1970, between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran citizens had died.
